Eclipses of the Moon can only occur during the Full Moon phase. It is then possible for the Moon to pass through Earth’s penumbral or umbral shadows thereby producing an eclipse. There are three types of lunar eclipses:
The visual appearance of these eclipse types differs dramatically from each other.
During the 17th century CE[1], Earth experienced 249 lunar eclipses. The following table shows the number of eclipses of each type over this period.
Lunar Eclipses: 1601 - 1700 | |||
Eclipse Type | Symbol | Number | Percent |
All Eclipses | - | 249 | 100.0% |
Penumbral | N | 91 | 36.5% |
Partial | P | 97 | 39.0% |
Total | T | 61 | 24.5% |
Total eclipses can be further classified as either central or non-central:
The statistical distribution of these classes during the 17th century CE appears in the following table.
Total Eclipses | ||
Classification | Number | Percent |
All | 61 | 100.0% |
Central | 50 | 82.0% |
Non-Central | 11 | 18.0% |
There are a minimum of two and a maximum of five lunar eclipses in every calendar year. Statistics for the number of eclipses each year during the century are listed below.
Number of Years with 2 Eclipses: 67 Number of Years with 3 Eclipses: 19 Number of Years with 4 Eclipses: 12 Number of Years with 5 Lunar Eclipses: 2 ( 1676 1694)
Two lunar eclipses in same month: 1694 Dec 01 & 1694 Dec 31
During any given century, old Saros series end while new ones begin. The year and Saros number of these events are as follows:
3 Saros Series' begin (Year/Saros): 1608/141 1615/135 1680/136 1 Saros Series' end (Year/Saros): 1611/ 95
For more information, see Catalog of Lunar Eclipse Saros Series.
The longest and shortest lunar eclipses of the century and other eclipse extrema are listed below.
Longest Total Lunar Eclipse: 1689 Apr 04 Duration = 01h44m41s Shortest Total Lunar Eclipse: 1628 Jul 16 Duration = 00h19m56s
Longest Partial Lunar Eclipse: 1616 Mar 03 Duration = 03h23m25s Shortest Partial Lunar Eclipse: 1694 Jul 07 Duration = 00h38m58s
Largest Total Lunar Eclipse: 1631 May 15 Umbra Magnitude = 1.8721 Smallest Total Lunar Eclipse: 1628 Jul 16 Umbra Magnitude = 1.0147
Largest Partial Lunar Eclipse: 1605 Apr 03 Umbra Magnitude = 0.9861 Smallest Partial Lunar Eclipse: 1694 Jul 07 Umbra Magnitude = 0.0317
Largest Penumbral Lunar Eclipse: 1607 Mar 13 Pen. Magnitude = 1.0510 Smallest Penumbral Lunar Eclipse: 1608 Aug 25 Pen. Magnitude = 0.0062
A total penumbral eclipse in one in which the entire Moon passes through the penumbra but misses the umbral shadow. During the century, there are 91 penumbral eclipses of which 3 ( 3.3%) are total penumbral eclipses:
1. Total Penumbral Eclipse: 1607 Mar 13 Pen. Magnitude = 1.0510 2. Total Penumbral Eclipse: 1637 Jul 07 Pen. Magnitude = 1.0079 3. Total Penumbral Eclipse: 1665 Jul 27 Pen. Magnitude = 1.0063
The concise details at greatest eclipse[2] for every lunar eclipse during the century are presented below. Key to Catalog of Lunar Eclipses contains a detailed description and explanation of every item listed in the catalog. The Catalog Number in the first column links to a figure showing the eclipse geometry and geographic visibility map of each phase of an eclipse.

[1] The terms BCE and CE are abbreviations for "Before Common Era" and "Common Era," respectively. They are the secular equivalents to the BC and AD dating conventions. (See: Year Dating Conventions )
[2] Greatest eclipse is defined as the instant when the Moon passes closest to the axis of Earth’s umbral shadow cone.

Each link below displays a web page containing 100 years of lunar eclipses. The data for each eclipse includes the date and time of greatest eclipse, Saros series, eclipse type, quincena solar eclipse parameter, gamma, eclipse magnitudes, and eclipse phase durations. Every eclipse also has links to digrams of eclipse geometry and world visibility, and Saros series tables.
These web pages are part of the Five Millennium Catalog of Lunar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000
The Gregorian calendar is used for all dates from 1582 Oct 15 onwards. Before that date, the Julian calendar is used. For more information on this topic, see Calendar Dates. The Julian calendar does not include the year 0. Thus the year 1 BCE is followed by the year 1 CE (See: BCE/CE Dating Conventions ). This is awkward for arithmetic calculations. Years in this catalog are numbered astronomically and include the year 0. Historians should note there is a difference of one year between astronomical dates and BCE dates. Thus, the astronomical year 0 corresponds to 1 BCE, and astronomical year -1 corresponds to 2 BCE, etc..
Lunar eclipse predictions must take into account the enlargement of Earth's shadows. In this Catalog, Earth's penumbral and umbral shadow sizes have been calculated using Danjon's enlargement method.
The coordinates of the Sun used in the predictions are based on the VSOP87 theory [Bretagnon and Francou, 1988]. The Moon's coordinates are based on the ELP-2000/82 theory [Chapront-Touze and Chapront, 1983]. For more information, see: Solar and Lunar Ephemerides. The revised value used for the Moon's secular acceleration is n-dot = -25.858 arc-sec/cy*cy, as deduced from the Apollo lunar laser ranging experiment (Chapront, Chapront-Touze, and Francou, 2002).
The largest uncertainty in the eclipse predictions is caused by fluctuations in Earth's rotation due primarily to tidal friction of the Moon. The resultant drift in apparent clock time is expressed as ΔT and is determined as follows:
A series of polynomial expressions have been derived to simplify the evaluation of ΔT for any time from -1999 to +3000. The uncertainty in ΔT over this period can be estimated from scatter in the measurements.
